Desctription

Hiroshige is known as an ukiyo-e master who excelled at landscapes. Landscapes feature prominently in the series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, which depicts scenes along the route from Nihonbashi in Edo to Kyoto. Although Kanbara is actually a temperate area, Hiroshige chose to show it draped in snow. The scene aptly conveys a sense of silence enshrouding the wintry evening and a pair of traveling companions trudging through the snow.
